Question: "I already own a KSM44 and I love it!! I was wondering if the KSM27 has the same sound just without the extra features, ie. the omni and figure 8 settings. I have read that the KSM32 has a different, more neutral sound but I havn't read any comparisons between the 44 and 27. Thanks for making such a great mic."
Answer: The KSM 27 cartridge is based on the KSM44, but does not include the rear portion where the second diaphragm of the KSM44 is located. The KSM27 is tuned for a brighter sound, and does not have the better pop protection of the KSM44 dual diaphragm scheme. The KSM27 proximity effect is also different, being a single diaphragm cartridge.
Question: "What is the output level on the KSM32 and the KSM44?"
Answer: KSM32:
- 36dBV per Pascal
KSM44:
- 31dBV per Pascal - cardioid
- 37dBV per Pascal - omnidirectional
- 36dBV per Pascal - bidirectional
Question: "I recently purchased a KSM-44 studio mic. I now, need information regarding possible pre-amps for this microphone. Any information regarding compatible pre-amps will be appreciated."
Answer:
There are hundreds of mic preamps on the market. Mix Magazine has published preamp reviews in the past.
For a simple basic preamp, try Behringer Mic-200.
Shure does not make a mic preamp for the KSM44.
Question: "I've heard the KSM32 and like it very much - and they've been VERY well received! How are the KSM44 and KSM27 different in terms of sonic quality from the KSM32? For my home studio cost is a factor, but the "right" mic for vocals and instruments is most important."
Answer: The KSM44 and KSM27 sound very similar to each other. The KSM32 has an extremely neutral, uncolored sound to it. The KSM27 and KSM44 have a bit more warmth and body to them.
